Ali Larijani in Parliament — Tehran, 2011
Ali Larijani, Tehran, 19 September 2011.
I took this photograph of Ali Larijani inside the Iranian Parliament building in Baharestan, Tehran, on 19 September 2011. At the time, he was serving as Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.
During the years that I occasionally attended parliamentary sessions to photograph lawmakers, I often found myself observing Larijani through the camera's viewfinder and quietly asking myself where this level of confidence came from.
Among Iranian political figures, his composure stood out. He carried himself with a calm authority that set him apart from most of the officials I had photographed. He gave the impression that his role and direction came from somewhere beyond the ordinary internal political circles of the Islamic Republic.
This impression became even stronger years later, when the Guardian Council disqualified him from running in the presidential election. He reacted with remarkable calmness and silence, as if waiting for a signal rather than contesting the decision. He eventually returned to the political stage and continued to operate at the highest levels of the Iranian state under the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
For this reason, I do not view Israel's reported assassination of Larijani merely as a blow to the Islamic Republic. In my view, it is also an attack on the wider international security networks and intelligence structures from which individuals like him sometimes emerge. These are individuals who, over a period of years, penetrate the ideological systems of power and operate within them, carrying out missions that shape the internal dynamics of those regimes.
This photograph captures a moment from that long and complex political trajectory.
