Henley Beach, Adelaide, South Australia | 27 April 2010, 11:00 am
I took this photograph at Henley Beach in Adelaide, shortly after arriving in Australia.
On a wall beside the beach, someone had written: “No Migrants, No Crime. Simple.”
As a newly arrived migrant, encountering these words was particularly confronting. I photographed the scene as a person stood nearby, their shadow falling across the wall as though contemplating the message.
It was an ordinary autumn morning by the sea, yet the words on that wall revealed a hostility towards migrants that stood in stark contrast to the peaceful surroundings.
More than sixteen years later, this photograph remains significant to me — not only as a record of an anti-immigration message in a public space, but also as a personal reminder of one of my earliest encounters with prejudice in Australia.
